Practice Observations: A Needed Reset, a Tough Film Session and Injury Updates
We're talking about practice. Not the games. Practice.
CLEVELAND — When the season ends, failing to advance in the NBA Cup could be one of the best things to happen for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Instead of participating in the Quarterfinal round of the NBA Cup on Tuesday evening, as the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors did, the Cavs held a full practice. It was just the second time since the season began that the Cavs were able to have a full practice at home, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
“It comes at a good time,” Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said.
The Cavs are sitting at 14-11 on the season. Even while factoring in several key injuries and a schedule that’s been light on rest, the Cavaliers have underwhelmed when compared to expectations. There have been issues — both based in effort and execution — that need to be fixed.
This is the time to do it.
“Firstly, just the rest part. Most games played1. Most back to backs. I think that’s true.” Atkinson said. “Then, it gave us the coaches some time to deep dive on where we can get better and have a great film session, which I think we did today. Just talk some team stuff and then have a real, legit practice. I feel great about today as a coach.”
