Game Night Observations: Winning Differently, Evan Mobley's Statement and Ty Jerome's Outburst
The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 129-123 on Sunday night to move to 47-10 on the season.
Winning in a variety of ways is one sign of a great team. The Cavs won in a way on Sunday night that isn’t part of their typical recipe for victory.
Yes, Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points and had a strong case as the game’s best player, but the Cavs didn’t shoot the ball well from beyond the arc, which is something that can be tough to overcome, especially on a night in which Darius Garland was unavailable due to a hip injury. If you looked in a crystal ball before the game and saw that the Cavs would make just 27.7 percent of their 3-pointers, a victory probably wasn’t the next thought.
Instead, the Cavs won this game on the glass. A sentence that hasn’t been written frequently this season. It’s not that the Cavs are a bad rebounding team, it’s just that they’re not a great one.
Cleveland entered Sunday night’s game against Memphis with the 12th-best rebounding rate in the NBA, collecting 50.3 percent of the available misses. Memphis, on the other hand, came in as the second-best rebounding team in the NBA.
