Game Night Observations: Donovan Mitchell's Playmaking and Jarrett Allen's Dominance

Donovan Mitchell looked pretty good, and that's what matters most.

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the San Antonio Spurs 124-116 on Thursday night at Rocket Arena.

The most important part of Thursday night wasn’t that the Cavs won a basketball game, but rather that Donovan Mitchell looked like himself during it.

The month of March hasn’t been kind to Mitchell. He’s endured one of the worst shooting slumps of his career. He entered Thursday averaging 20.3 points per game while shooting 33.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from 3-point range during the month.

Against the Spurs, Mitchell finished with 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting and 4-of-9 from 3-point range. He also dished out 14 assists, setting a new career-high. It’s not the most impressive box score that Mitchell has put up — or even close to it. What stood out on Thursday was how Mitchell seemed to be in complete control of the game nearly the entire time he was on the floor.

That’s something that had been missing from Mitchell’s game during this stretch. It’s not just that he was shooting poorly, but that he wasn’t impacting the ways in several of the ways. His playmaking picked up in the last week and was very much on display against the Spurs.
